Overview: Using the SignalTap II Logic Analyzer



The SignalTap® II Logic Analyzer lets you capture signals from internal device nodes while the device is running at speed. The captured data is displayed as a waveform within a SignalTap II File (.stp).

You can use the SignalTap II Logic Analyzer to perform various tasks:

  1. Create and set up a STP File.

    1. Create a new STP File.
    2. Add instances to a STP File.
    3. Add nodes to each instance.
    4. Assign one signal as the clock to each instance.
    5. Set the sample depth for each instance.
    6. Enable signals for data and/or trigger acquisition for each instance.
    7. Reserve nodes for incremental routing.
    8. Set the trigger input for each instance.
    9. Set the trigger output for each instance.
    10. Assign a signal to the debug port.

  2. Compile the STP File with the selected project.

  3. Program a device.

  4. Acquire SignalTap II data.

    1. Set the trigger position for each instance.
    2. Define and enable the trigger levels for each instance.
    3. Run instances in the SignalTap II Logic Analyzer.

  5. Analyze SignalTap II data.

    1. Insert time bars in the waveform display.
    2. Align node names.
    3. Create, rename, and ungroup a bus.
    4. Specify a data format for bus signals.
    5. Create a mnemonic to symbolize a bus value.
    6. Create a SignalTap II List File to view captured logic events in a list.
    7. Save and view acquired data in the Data Log.
    8. Print waveform data.
    9. Export SignalTap II waveform data.
    10. Show and hide sections of the SignalTap II window.
